Holy Recall! Mattel Warns on BatmobileApr 14, 9:57 am ET

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Joker and the Riddler could not do it, but the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission has put the Batmobile out of commission.

The CPSC and toymaker Mattel Inc. (MAT.N) on Wednesday issued a notice telling parents to take a Batmobile toy car away form their children, because the rear tail wings on the car pose a puncture or laceration hazard.

"Parents should take these toys away from children immediately and contact the firm for information on receiving free replacement wings," the recall notice said.

Mattel has received 14 reports of injuries from the toy, including scrapes, scratches, lacerations and punctures. Four required medical treatment, the recall notice said.

The notice covers 314,000 units of the 20-inch blue and gray plastic vehicle with a detachable motorcycle, which was sold at mass merchants and toy stores nationwide from June 2003 through February 2004 for about $27, the notice said. Model number B4944 is written on the bottom of the toy vehicle.

The Batmobile is the vehicle of choice of Batman, the popular U.S. superhero whose battles with villains like the Joker, Catwoman and the Riddler have been chronicled for decades in comic books, movies and on television.

Parents can contact Mattel at 888-271-9891 to receive free replacement wings that do not have pointy ends.
